Chapter Five
"The king cannot allow simply anyone to walk in, you see. Surely you understand Clopin's suspicion? But if you are a friend of the DreamWalker...." Clopin stopped pacing to watch the new visitor. Kheperu sat perfectly still, his expression blank. He had removed his cloak, but still wore the gold beetle-shaped pin that had fastened it. His clothes were very fine, but made of strange materials, and they hardly fit Clopin's ideas of gypsy fashion. The dark eyes reminded him too much of his own and he found the man's gaze unsettling, so he resumed his pacing as he continued.
"But she is not here. The last time we saw her was nearly a year ago, and before that she was away for at least twelve years, maybe more..." Clopin paused trying to remember.
"She is searching."
Clopin turned to the stranger with one raised eyebrow "Searching for what?"
"Kheperu."
"You?"
"That also."
Clopin puzzled over this for a moment, then decided it was yet another miscommunication not worth pursuing. "Well, Clopin will let you stay in the Court for now. You are dismissed." He waved his hand airily and turned away, hoping the stranger would understand his gesture. He wanted to be alone to think. Clopin turned back after a moment to repeat his command but saw that the stranger had left without a sound.

"How do you know the DreamWalker?" Jehan panted as he caught up to the stranger's long strides. Kheperu turned to look at him and stopped walking as he attempted to translate the thoughts in his head into a language the boy would understand.
"We......know...." The tall stranger frowned at the dirt floor. "Sebaut en khut....we meet there." He raised his gaze from his ponderings and looked at the boy helplessly.
Jehan gave up on that one and tried a simpler query. "Where are you from?"
"Egypt." The man waited patiently for the next question, mildly amused by the boy's curiousity.
"So why are you looking for her? Is there a Dream-Beast?!" Jehan asked excitedly.
The tall Egyptian looked confused a moment. "I am...not."
"Not looking for her? But--"
"She looks for Kheperu." The stranger studied Jehan's blank look for a moment and decided the boy must not have any further questions, so he walked off to find a tent to stay in, leaving a bewildered Jehan scratching his head.
