Chapter Two
The DreamWalker remembered the soft reddish-brown glow of Panther Darling behind her as she turned away from her personal quest and followed the pull of intuition that demanded urgency. She had followed it back towards Paris as quickly as she could, but in her relentless pursuit she had exhausted herself, and the pain in her hip had grown worse until she had collapsed on the riverbank.
Several hours later she was resting more comfortably, leaning against a tree, when she heard laughter like the faint tinkling of water. Cautiously she opened her eyes and saw five slender young women dancing in the moonlight, skimming about on the surface of the stream as if it were ice. One of them noticed her gaze and they all vanished without a trace.
Rayven began to hum a haunting gypsy tune.
~
She finished her song and opened her eyes slowly to see the same five girls standing before her. Their skin was lily-white in themoon's glow. Each of them was perfect and beautiful, with long silky hair and unearthly eyes. One of them stepped forward, her weight so slight that the grass did not bend beneath her feet.
"We are the Asrai. You have sung beautifully. We would reward you." Her voice was like softly chiming bells, and the wind stilled at her first word.
Rayven's voice was a perfect contrast, deep, soft and gentle. "Might I name the reward?" she asked cautiously.
"Perhaps!" The young girl replied, breaking the stillness in the night air with her light tone. She began darting from side to side in the air in front of the DreamWalker, her mischievous smile reflected by the others who hung behind her.
"I have been called to a task. I wish to know it's nature."
Like minnows disturbed in a pool, suddenly all the girls began to dance at once, their voices mixing in song, indistinguishable from each other.
"Girl of fire, burning bright,
flees her fate in the night.
She runs from that which she must see,
guardian of life her fate to be.
Find her, catch her, make her stay,
she herself must not betray."
Then they were gone, though the air was silver in remembrance of their presence.
~
There was a crack of lightning and the resulting surge of energy did not help Rayven to concentrate on her physical surroundings. She had not tried to come with a storm this time, it had just happened.
It wasn't terribly easy following the light and colour that was the girl she was tracking, yet trying to keep aware of her physical surroundings so as not to bump into things.
Then she saw her, about to cross over from the life she needed into the life she thought she wanted, and which her pride would keep her from ever turning back from. Rayven reached out to stop her although she was too far away.
But then, magic occurs most often in thresholds.
