Two Spirits Akin

[A/N: Disclaimer: I do not (Never will have no desire to would sooner die than) work for Disney. Clopin belongs to Michael Eisner and his minions until such time as he expires. I once again profusely thank Autumn Loweck for her characters of Jehan and Melisande, as well as her picture of the inside of Clopin's mind. I also thank: Gabe for the character of Sam, Virginia for the character(s) of Betty-Sue, and most especially Mike, for the irresistible, incorrigible, and much-used Darling Brothers, particularly Panther. I suggest that one read "To Walk Through a Dream" before this. A word of warning for your personal tastes, this story does not include Clopin much, it is mostly a deeper look into Rayven's mind, as well as a mystery leading to a future story.]

With Wavering Footsteps

Chapter One

The cypress dreamed, as trees occasionally do. It dreamed as a child dreams, of those things seen which were happy and enjoyable, and of that which has yet to pass, but will also be good.
And as it dreamed it also watched that which was passing now, observed the haloed moon, the milky wash of gold that slid warmly over the sky in anticipation of dawn, the still figure in the low branches...
And as the sun rose she withdrew from the dream of the cypress and opened her own eyes to the light of day.
Partaking in the dream of a tree is dangerous, for trees dream slowly, so that it is easy to lose track of time, and their presence is so strong that one must make an effort of will to remember who they are at all times to avoid being absorbed. But for Rayven DreamWalker it was worth the risk. Watching her surroundings through the tree's mind allowed her to rest while still keeping a continuous watch for danger.
Rayven's situation was a particularly unusual one, and somewhat precarious. She had not the security of being one who sleeps lightly, and can be assured of waking at the approach of any threat, for she did not sleep, at least not in the manner most people do. Her only way of resting was to find someone with peaceful dreams and go inside them. This had earned her the title of the DreamWalker.
Being somewhat lame, she had to keep close watch for predators, because it was more to her advantage to avoid danger than to fight. Unfortunately, the strain of maintaining an awareness of self while seeing through the tree's mind had left her only slightly more rested than she had been the night before.
Carefully (mind the hip), stiffly (cypress trees are not terribly comfortable), she lowered herself out of her roost. A light rain was misting the countryside as she limped her way towards the next village, leaving a trail in the long silvered grass.

"Gypsy. You don' belong in here."
"I'm looking for a man--"
A slurred voice at the back of the inn "Too late at your age, grand'mere!" There was coarse laughter. Both Rayven and the innkeeper ignored it.
"It's not that I've much against you personally, understand, but you'll get only trouble here."
"I don't need a room. I'm just trying to find someone. He's slightly peculiar looki-"
"Try the carny, gypsy!"
The innkeeper only shrugged in response and the DreamWalker entered the drizzling rain again.
