Chapter Six
"I can't live like this. The Court of Miracles is my home, but I love Phoebus, and I don't want to choose between the two of them. There has to be a better way." Esmerelda complained, leaning on the counter.
"You could disguise Phoebus as a gypsy and sneak him in." Anne said quietly, giggling to herself as she pictured it. Esmerelda favored her with a smile.
"And of course Clopin knows you two are in love and you wouldn't just go running off with another gypsy, so if you didn't want to arouse his suspicion you'd have to disguise Phoebus as a gypsy woman." Therese joined in, grinning wickedly to herself.
"As if his pride wasn't injured enough already." Esmerelda said, her grumpy mood returning. They were all silent a moment, each reflecting on their own thoughts. Therese wiped the last of the dishes and came around the counter to sit at one of the tables. It was late morning, and there were no patrons yet. Esmerelda and a moment later, Anne, joined her.
"That's the problem with them. They're too much alike." Therese muttered. This brought a mixture of confused and skeptical looks from the other two. "They're both very proud, and very stubborn, those being the two traits most involved in this particular situation." She pointed out.
"But now Phoebus had his pride broken..." Anne chimed in. Therese patted her hand.
"Bruised dear, not broken."
The three of them were silent in thought once more.
"We kept the coins Phoebus brought, because Clopin never saw them. It feels strange hiding them from him, dividing them up between ourselves without his knowing. I guess Phoebus really *did* threaten his leadership." Esmerelda admitted guiltily. Then a vague idea began to form in her mind. "Phoebus doesn't know Clopin comes here often. What if they met here, on neutral ground?"
"Oh no! I saw Phoebus when you brought him in here. I'm not having my tavern become a battleground!" Therese cried out.
