Chapter Three

She had been near one of the cookfires when they had seen her fall. Fearing the worst, they had rushed her inside the nearest wagon and laid her on the bed. The healer was brought in immediately and proclaimed that she was going into labor. Everyone but the healer and two of the older gypsy women who had served as midwives before was ushered out of the tiny wagon and the door was shut.
For many months now they had known she was with child. The fortune tellers of the tribe had foreseen it, and as it was known that no gypsy was the father, they could only assume that the child was of magical origins. Krianna seemed very much aware of it, even if she was not aware of her tribe, and she was happy about it. The Seers could not say from whence the child had come, but they knew that it was going to be a child of good power, and that it had a powerful destiny around it.
Much to the healer's surprise, their gypsy princess seemed to have returned to them. Between the labor pains her eyes were clear and startlingly lucid. But she did not cry when the pains came, she seemed to be humming, and asthe child's head emerged her humming became song. The baby's cries seemed to harmonize with her singing as it slipped out and took it's first breath, and Krianna fell back, exhausted. The two other gypsy women took the baby girl from the healer's hands and began to clean her off, and he knelt beside the new mother. Her eyes were turned to the wagon's open window, and he heard her whisper softly, "My Love." He followed her gaze to the window and was startled to see a large black raven perched on the frame. It was standing on it's left leg and looking down at her. Had that bird been here the whole time?!!??! He was about to shoo the bird away, but it abruptly flew off of it's own accord. He turned back to Krianna and saw that she seemed to be asleep, a peaceful smile on her lips. Many mothers looked like that after a hard birthing. Then he looked closer and realized that Krianna was no longer alive.
In the midwives' arms the child began an unearthly song unlike any sound a newborn child was ever heard to make. The seventh daughter of a seventh daughter of a seventh daughter, making her presence known to the world...
